When it comes to overcoat there is always a mistaken impression about the topcoat and overcoats. Both are protective outer garments but the basic difference between the two is the length.

Overcoats emerged first and another important difference between the two is that topcoat are shorter also they will come above the knee. Now let us see more about men’s overcoat. There is no doubt that overcoats are superior to the topcoat.  

Overcoats were popularized in the first place by Louis XIV. He encouraged the wearing of overcoats, vests and breeches. Men experienced a straight-cut vest for the first time in the year 1660. After that time the English has influenced the rule dramatically and has played an important role in influencing the European fashion to a great extent.

Mostly wool was the base of heavy protective clothing. This material is characterized to have many features like being durable and soft. The weight of the wool is an evidence of its thick fibers mainly constituting its warmth. The warmth of the end product depends on thick fiber of this material.

Fashion is the main reason to associate social status, part of military and professional life. In the 18th century overcoats were used as a part of the uniform in military battles. In World War I it is commonly known as the trench coat.

A few changes are responsible for the evolution of overcoats through its various stages. Originally the overcoat was named the great overcoat. The former Soviet Union was a great fan of it.

The European militaries used to use this great-coat. The French call it the Redingote, which means a riding coat.  It is called by different regions in different names for instance it is also known as the frock coat. 

The frock overcoat is a formal daytime coat and usually worn with a frock coat. The great Sherlock Holmes also used to wear it and it used to be called the Ulster coat.
